How a PianoDisc player piano works

PianoDisc doesn't play recordings through a speaker. It moves your piano's own keys and pedals, so what you hear is your piano, played live.

  1. Choose the music

Pick a song from the iQ Player app on your iPhone or iPad and press play.

  2. The Prodigy II receives it

A control unit hidden in the piano reads the performance data: which notes, how hard and how long.

  3. Solenoids move the keys

Patented electro-mechanical solenoids under the keys and pedals control each key's movement, velocity and duration.

  4. Your piano performs

The hammers strike the strings just as a pianist would, from whisper-soft to full volume, across 1,024 levels of expression.

What you can do with PianoDisc

Hear live piano anytime

Play performances by world-class pianists on your own piano, from classical masterpieces to jazz, Broadway and pop, for dinner parties, holidays or a quiet evening.

Record your own playing

With the Interactive or QuietTime package, optical sensors under the keys capture your performance as MIDI data you can play back, edit or send to a computer.

Practice without disturbing anyone

QuietTime adds a piano silencer and built-in sounds, so you can practice on headphones late at night without waking the house.

Upgrade an older PianoDisc

Own an older PianoDisc system? It can be upgraded to Prodigy II, and PianoDisc's Legacy Music Exchange lets you trade music on floppy disk or CD for digital files.

From living rooms to hotel lobbies

PianoDisc systems play in private homes, hotels, restaurants, music schools and recording studios, bringing live piano music to anyone within earshot.

The company was built by piano people. Brothers Gary and Kirk Burgett, a pianist and teacher and a piano technician, ran a Sacramento piano store before selling their first PianoDisc units in 1988. The same family later revived Mason & Hamlin.

PianoDisc questions

What is PianoDisc?

PianoDisc is a player piano system that installs inside an acoustic piano and plays it automatically, moving the piano's own keys and pedals. It is made by PianoDisc of Sacramento, California, which has been in business since 1988.

How does a PianoDisc player piano work?

PianoDisc uses patented electro-mechanical solenoids installed under the keys and pedals. They control each key's movement, velocity and duration, reproducing a performance with 1,024 levels of expression. You choose music from the iQ Player app on an iPhone or iPad.

Can PianoDisc be installed in my piano?

In most cases, yes. PianoDisc systems can be installed in almost any new or pre-owned acoustic grand or upright piano. Call us with your piano's make and model and we'll confirm.

Is the PianoDisc hardware visible?

No. The components are hidden inside the piano once installed, so your piano looks the same as before.

What is the difference between the Prodigy II packages?

Entertainment plays music. Interactive adds the ProScan optical sensor system so you can record your own playing. QuietTime adds the ProRecord system, a piano silencer for headphone practice, a sound module with 88 sounds and internal record memory.

Can I upgrade an older PianoDisc system?

Yes. Older PianoDisc systems can be upgraded to Prodigy II, and PianoDisc's Legacy Music Exchange lets owners exchange music on floppy disk or CD for digital files playable from a phone or tablet.
