Nearly a century of piano innovation
Koichi Kawai was the first person in Japan to design and build a complete piano action. In 1927 he founded his own company in Hamamatsu, and innovation has defined Kawai ever since.
Where many makers rely on tradition alone, Kawai pairs traditional craftsmanship with modern materials and engineering. The clearest example is the Millennium III action, which uses ABS-Carbon composite parts that are stronger, lighter and more stable than wood. That technology is why a Kawai keeps its touch and tone consistent year after year.
The same philosophy runs through the whole lineup, from a first upright for a beginning student to the Shigeru Kawai concert grands chosen by professionals.
Kawai grand piano series compared
Kawai grands come in three series. A longer grand gives you longer strings, a larger soundboard and deeper bass. Each bar shows the size range of a series, drawn to scale.

Why Kawai is called the world's most advanced piano
Millennium III action with ABS-Carbon
Kawai replaces key wooden action parts with ABS-Carbon, a rigid composite that is stronger, lighter and faster than wood. It is also far less affected by humidity, a real advantage in Arizona's dry climate, where wooden parts can shrink and loosen.
Longer keys for even control
Kawai grands use extended-length key sticks, so the key responds more evenly whether you play near the front edge or deep between the black keys, as in chords and fast passages.
Tone built from solid materials
Kawai grand and K Series upright pianos use tapered solid spruce soundboards for a warm, resonant tone that projects clearly across the keyboard.
Digital sound from a concert grand
Select Kawai digital and hybrid pianos use SK-EX Rendering, a sound engine built from the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX concert grand. NOVUS hybrids add a real Millennium III piano action read by optical sensors.

Kawai piano questions
Are Kawai pianos good?
Yes. Kawai has built pianos in Japan since 1927 and is widely regarded as one of the world's leading piano makers. Its Millennium III action is known for consistent touch and durability, Kawai pianos are common in homes, schools and teaching studios, and the Kawai EX concert grand has been played at major international competitions.
What is the difference between the Kawai GL and GX Series?
The GL Series (5'0" to 6'2") offers Kawai's core grand design in home-friendly sizes. The GX Series (5'5" to 7'6") adds thickened rims, vertically laminated bridges and an upgraded action, and extends to larger sizes for advanced pianists and performance spaces.
What is the difference between Kawai and Shigeru Kawai?
Both are made by Kawai Musical Instruments. Shigeru Kawai is the premium line, built in small numbers by Master Piano Artisans with hand-selected materials and hand voicing. Kawai GL and GX grands are built in higher volume and cost less.
What is the Kawai Millennium III action?
It is Kawai's piano action, built with ABS-Carbon composite parts that are stronger, lighter and faster than traditional wood, and far less affected by changes in humidity. It is used across Kawai grand pianos and K Series uprights.
Should I buy an acoustic, digital or hybrid Kawai?
Choose an acoustic grand or upright for the fullest tone and touch. Choose a digital piano if you need headphone practice, no tuning and a lower price. Choose a hybrid if you want a real piano action with the convenience of a digital instrument. Playing all three in our showroom is the fastest way to decide.
